Horse Looking for a Home

Good trail riding horse needs forever home.

As written by his current owners:

ROHAN – 14.2h 11yo bay quarter horse/pony. Due to an injury a forever-home is wanted for Rohan. He was our daughter’s show jumper but developed sidebone after an accident (x-rays available). He can no longer jump or do anything involving tight turns but would be well suited to an experienced rider wanting to do trail riding. We have done some natural horsemanship work with him and would benefit from more work as, although he doesn’t kick or bite, his ground manners could be improved. He has been regularly shod, wormed, vaccinated and had annual dentist checks. He is a good doer and comes with a bridle and numerous rugs. We ask that you make a donation of $500 to Charlies’ Angels as payment. Ph: Jenny 0487 353 766.

You can find more photos of Rohan at  http://flickr.com/gp/ahesketh/AQg6p9/

(Note: this horse is not in Charlie’s Angels’ care.)

(Rohan is located at Maroochy River, SE Qld.)

Shona and Joleena Find a Forever Home

Shona, day 1, two-month-old Ruben at foot

Well, this is big news.

Shona and Joleena are our longest-term residents, having been with us for two years, as our first rescues after the initial dogger yard rescue of four horses that began this charity. We rescued them from a slaughterhouse holding yard, along with their two-month-old colts at their side. They had come from an intensive breeding program and came with evidence of serious and prolonged trauma and an exceptional fear for humans.

While their colts grew up beautifully, and we weaned them, gelded them and found them wonderful homes at six months of age, Shona and Joleena went on to become our most challenging behavioural cases. Physically, they healed well and proved to be robust horses. Emotionally and psychologically, these girls carried some very big scars.

Along the way they spent time with Kerryn Armstrong and Lillan Roquet, qualified Parelli instructors from Intuitive Connection, and while they did progress, their futures seemed to fall into one of two directions: find an exceptional, advanced Parelli home to go to in order to continue their development, or find a permanent retirement home where they could live their days as naturally roaming horses but still with the routine management and care (feet, teeth, worming etc.) that all horses need.

Shona and Joleena, best friends

We’d been offered several homes over their time, where they could run free as wild horses on huge properties, but we wanted more for them than that. At times it was very difficult to turn down these offers, as we tried to balance their needs and preferences (and their preferences were clearly that they’d prefer not to engage with people), with their potential, their lifespan, our ability as a charity to provide what they needed, and what we as humans considered ‘best’ for them.

This week, we received a remarkable offer. Gaye Harvey, from Horse Heaven, has been a supporter of Charlie’s Angels since we began. Her exceptional, professional agistment and training property near Stanthorpe includes a 500 acre retirement paddock. But she also continues to manage the welfare of those retired horses, ensuring their feet are regularly done, their teeth are done and they are wormed and vaccinated. The horses are carefully monitored daily and any injuries or weight loss corrected immediately.

In short, this is exactly what these girls need. It was also of top concern for us that Shona and Joleena were able to go to a forever home together. As they are such good friends and have obviously been through so much, we didn’t want to separate them if it was at all possible.

For these girls to find this forever home, of this quality, is one of those miraculous events that happen for us every now and then that affirm that we’re doing the right thing. Our emphasis is always on quality not quantity. We are not interested in ‘turning over’ horses just to make ourselves look good. We are prepared to hold onto each and every horse that comes our way for their entire life if necessary, rather than risk them going to the wrong home. We are not afraid to turn down an offer of a home if it just doesn’t feel right, and we’re proud to say this has given us a tremendously successful horse-placement record over the past two years.

Joleena

We are so very, very grateful to Gaye and her husband, John, for offering these girls a place to finally call home, knowing they will be safe and cared for for the rest of their days. What amazing Angels you are! We’re so proud to have you in our Angel team.

Therapy horses seeking new home, Stanthorpe

UPDATE: These horses have found a home!

We received a sad email this morning from someone whose brother has passed away, leaving behind his sone and two much-loved stock horses.

They are 22 and 27 years of age. One of them has been used in part as a therapy horse for his autistic and multi-handicapped son. They are located near Stanthorpe and are urgently seeking a loving forever home. If you can assist, please email Margaret on thelarkins2@bigpond.com.

Two arabian geldings seeking a home

Two beautiful Arabian geldings are seeking a home urgently. RALLEN – 30 yr old Chestnut and WINDY – 27 yr old Bay.

Rallen and Windy’s owner sadly has to find a new home for her horses due to her own ill-health. This is a very sad case and we need to find a loving forever home for both Rallen and Windy to go to together. Rallen and Windy have been with their owner since they were yearlings so we very much need their new owner to be someone who can understand how truly difficult this must be for their current owner.

Both horses are retired and are to be companion horses only. They have always had regular farrier work and annual dentistry. Their worming is up to date. These horses have no known health issues. They wear rugs and need to be seen to twice daily, fed, brushed, lovingly cared for. They get lucerne in the mornings, and a mix of lucerne chaff, pellets, fruit, etc. in the evenings. Both horses love treats and are very affectionate.

The horses are located in Oceanview, near Dayboro, SE Qld. For more information please call Eileen on 07 3352 3108 / 0404 085 768 / eileenmclean251@gmail.com.

Solomon and Ruben weaned and gelded

We have reached a milestone!

Solomon, approx 7 months old, June 2010

Our two gorgeous colts, Solomon and Ruben, have been weaned and gelded. We picked the boys up along with their mums from a slaughterhouse holding yard in January this year, at just two months of age. They are purebred Standardbreds.

Solomon will now be adopted by his foster mum, Donna, and Ruben is looking for a special home to go to where he can be loved and trained and guided with care into his future.

Gelding the boys

Donna, along with her sister Sharon, has done a wonderful job caring for both the boys and their mums. It’s been a time consuming and complex endeavour and we are very grateful for their dedication and care, without which, these four horses would now be on dinner plates in Europe, or in a can of dog food.

If you are interested in adopting Ruben and providing a first-class home for him for the future, please contact us at charlies-angels@live.com.au.

Zazen finds a new home

Seven-year-old Zazen, an ex racehorse that faced an uncertain future, has found himself adopted into a wonderful home in south-east Queensland. Here’s what his new people have to say:

He makes us laugh already!!

He sticks his head out of the stable to look at anything that’s going on, and after we brushed him this afternoon he decided to rub up and down on rods head, the baby was laughing at Zazen rubbing on her dad!!  Very cute!!

Its been a lovely weekend with him here, and the other horses have been hanging around watching all the action.  I think the agisted gelding and Zazen will be great mates and are waiting to ditch their old companion mares as soon as they can get to each other!!  Rubbing and kissing over the fence.

He is like a giant dog, follows the car down the driveway and sticks his head in the door when you get out.

Zazen is a real character and very cheeky!!  He will fit in here just fine.

We wish Zazen and his new people a wonderful long life together and look forward to having a continued relationship with all of them through our ongoing education series and workshops.
