This brought tears to my eyes. I have an old faithful....she's 27, going on 28 this year. Got her when she was 4 yo (and I was 15!!) . So many wonderful memories of our life together. Tango is a treasure. Have met so many people and made so many friends through her. I have carted her all over QLD with me as I moved from home to uni then to various teaching posts through the state. Words cannot describe the bond and emotion I feel for this old mare. Bless you for doing what you have done for Anastasia. xx

What a truly beautiful post! And what amazingly valid points you've made about the value of older horses (and people). Youve kist made me cry, thinking about my old Indy boy standing in his paddock waiting for his dinner every night :) I love that horse to bits, and I'm so glad that when my situation was different, I was unable to rehome him. He will be with me forever and his life and wisdom are greatly valued and appreciated :)

After doing a lot of research on the net, I've come to the conclusion they are definately pinworms due to the fact that they seem to be the only ones which cause the itching in the back end. The adult female worms come out of the anus mostly at night and secrete their eggs within a sticky substance on and around the anus, this is what causes the itching. After some time this egg laden sticky stuff (egg glue) hardens becomes crusty and falls off onto the ground or the horse scratches on a tree or post and the eggs are then picked up again through licking or eating grass where they have fallen.
I'm going to continue with her regular worming but also start to regularly wash around her back end and apply an oil each day. The eggs won't be able to stick to the oil.
