Adopting a Rescue Horse

Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescue horse. We can only continue to save lives with your help. Please read the following before applying to adopt.

We understand that some of these conditions might sound strict, but anyone who is truly motivated by the right reasons will understand why. Our highest duty is to protect these horses for life.

Is a rescue horse right for you?

If you are looking for your first horse, or a horse for your child (especially if you’re looking for a pony for your child), or a horse to compete with, there is only a slim chance that a rescue horse will be right for you. Horses that need to be rescued have fallen on hard times. They may have been abused and neglected. They are still good horses; but they need help to reclaim their confidence and abilities and this requires someone with experience, patience and time.

If, on the other hand, you are experienced with horses, have the knowledge, abilities, practicalities, time and money, and you are motivated to give a horse a good home for life, then a rescue horse may just be for you.

If you have some knowledge of horses and don’t have a wish to ride one, but are willing to offer one a good home for life, then we can more than likely find you a suitable horse.

What is the process for adopting a horse?

It is a policy of this organisation that Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue Inc. horses are adopted into forever homes. They have already been through too much to have them end up in the wrong hands again; therefore, a CAHR Inc. horse cannot ever be sold, given away, bred from, leased or in any other way passed on. Horses are only adopted on a “lifetime lease”. In other words, CAHR Inc. retains the ownership of the horse for life. If, for any reason, the adoption does not work out, the horse MUST be returned to CAHR Inc.

CAHR Inc. horses are microchipped and the registration remains with CAHR Inc. for life.

It is also a policy that the adopting person remains a financial member of CAHR Inc. for the duration of the life of the horse, and that they provide a brief yearly report and photograph of the horse.

How much does it cost to adopt a horse?

The cost of adoption is $500 per horse.

  • The cost of adoption contributes to the care the horse has received while in our custody, and undoubtedly won’t even reach the amount it cost us to feed them, worm them, float them, get their feet done, get veterinary attention and so on.
  • We have set a straight adoption fee regardless of the horse’s size, abilities, colour, breed or temperament because we believe that all life is equally valuable.
  • The other reason for choosing a $500 figure, is because that will equal or surpass the maximum of what a knackery will pay for a horse (excluding, perhaps Clydesdale) and therefore there is no chance a “dogger” will take one of our horses because there will be no financial benefit to them.

What guarantees do we give with an adopted horse?

Simply put, none. Horses are all very individual animals, with their own unique personalities, preferences, irritants and levels of trust. We can only present you with the information we have acquired over our time with the horse, but it is impossible for us to know the animal’s full (or true) history. When you adopt a CAHR Inc. horse, you do so with the same risk you would buying any horse.

However, we do guarantee that we will tell you everything we know, that we will do our best to work with you through any difficulties you might have, and we guarantee to take the horse back, no questions asked, if it doesn’t work out for you for any reason.
