About

Charlie today, in his new forever home, living life to the full!

Sometimes, there are moments in life when you are just called to act and act quickly. Charlie’s rescue was one of those moments. His story touched people so deeply, that this organisation was initiated and named in his honour.

Charlie’s Angels began with the impromptu rescue of four horses from a Gympie “dogger” sale, in September 2009, by founders of the organisation, Joanne Schoenwald and Alwyn Blayse. They were so overwhelmed with the misery that confronted them that they knew they couldn’t stand by in silence while so hundreds of thousands of horses were suffering so badly.

Mission Statement

Charlie’s Angels seeks to change the world for horses.

Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue believes that every life is valuable.

As members of Charlie’s Angels, we shall be a believer of all that is good in people and of all that is deserving in animals. We shall plead for their lives, campaign for their safety and uphold their right to a natural death. We shall seek out the injured and the maimed, the unloved, and the abandoned and tend to them in their last day.

Purpose

Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation (endorsed as a deductible gift recipient) whose purpose is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected, abandoned and homeless horses in order to improve their lives. Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue Inc. then finds permanent “forever” homes for these horses through its adoption scheme. The organisation undertakes community education as an essential part of its role in addressing welfare issues.

In 2010, we began tackling the root causes of the problem of horse slaughter in Australia. We’ll continue to rescue horses, but unless we can bring some changes to the laws and systems that support the cycle of horse slaughter, we’re barely touching the surface. For every horse we save, there’s 100,000 more waiting to take its place. We don’t think that’s good enough, so we’ll be campaigning for change.

The ethos of our organisation is very much “quality not quantity”. By taking fewer rescue horses on, we can give each horse our full attention to their rehabilitation and do everything we can to meet their needs on a physical, psychological and emotional level. We engage professionals in our treatment of horses, from veterinary care, through to holistic practitioners.

Our organisation is developed and run with the highest professional standards in mind. We are not a fly-by-night organisation. We will still be here in sixty years time! With this in mind, we have invested, and continue to invest, considerable time, energy and thought into building strong foundations and a solid framework to work within. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethics and accountability. Our interest is in forming authentic, long-term relationships with the people in our Charlie’s Angels community, our adopting carers, and our horses.

Our incorporation number is: IA37668
