Bet on a sure thing in this year’s Melbourne Cup

It’s less than a week until the running of the Melbourne Cup, “the race that stops a nation”. Punters all over the country will be celebrating with champagne lunches and a public holiday in Victoria.

“Punters are tipped to splurge a record $1.67 billion on the four-day Flemington racing carnival that begins on Saturday with Derby Day… A remarkable $230 million alone will be wagered on the race that stops the nation – Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup” reports Money & Me.

It’s a sad but true fact that the vast majority of Thoroughbreds bred in this country, will end up being slaughtered. Thoroughbreds are bred to race and their career (if they even get a start) rarely extends beyond seven years or so. As a horse can live for over thirty years, this leaves a long life to be cared for.

Australia exports horse meat for dinner plates in Europe and Japan and it’s not the old and sick horses that are slaughtered, it’s the young, fit ones in the prime of their life: race horses.

So we’d like to ask you to please consider this when you’re placing your bets next week, and maybe consider betting on a sure thing, the people who are fighting to keep these horses out of slaughter yards. If you would like to donate your bets to Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue, we guarantee they’ll go towards saving a horse’s life. All of our horses are winners!
